Long drives on Hill Country acreage wash out where water runs down the middle. We crown the drive, build a crushed limestone base and turn the water off before it gains speed.
On acreage around Boerne, Helotes, Seguin and the outer parts of Bexar County, gravel driveways and ranch roads are common. We clear the route, strip the soft soil, cut and fill to a steady grade and build a compacted base of crushed limestone or caliche that holds up to trucks and trailers. Long drives on rock often need a breaker for the cuts and fill from the spoil for the dips.
Water is what tears up gravel drives here. A heavy storm can cut a gully down a drive that has no crown, especially on a Hill Country slope. We shape the drive so water sheds to the sides, add swales or culverts where it crosses a draw, and set the base thicker where the ground is soft. Low-water crossings on private drives need special care.
We also dig out and prepare the base for new concrete or asphalt driveways, break out and haul old ones, and cut aprons where a drive meets the street. Work in a city or county right-of-way needs approval from whoever owns the road, which we confirm before starting. An old drive's crushed concrete can sometimes be reused as base for the new one.
Driveways & roads in San Antonio: common questions
Is caliche good for a driveway base?
Caliche can make a firm base when it is compacted, but it gets slick and dusty. Crushed limestone holds up better in most cases.
Do I need a culvert at the road?
Most likely, where a ditch runs along the road. The road's owner, the city or the county, decides the pipe size and the permit.
Can you fix a washed-out drive?
Yes. We regrade it with a crown, rebuild the base where it is thin and give the water a place to go.
