The San Antonio Excavating Company handles excavation, grading, trenching, land clearing and drainage for homes and businesses in San Antonio and the towns around it. Our work covers both kinds of ground in the area: the black clay on the south and east sides, and the rock and caliche that start in the Hill Country to the north and west.
Rock and clay change everything about a dig. A pool hole in Stone Oak may need a breaker for days, while the same hole in the clay east of downtown goes fast but needs care with water and compaction. Over the Edwards Aquifer recharge zone, runoff control is part of the plan from the start.
Most jobs start with a call about a yard that floods, a pool or addition that needs a hole, a sewer line to replace, or a lot to clear. We look at the site, check the ground, the trees and the drainage, request the Texas811 locate, and give you the scope and price in a written quote.

Frequently asked questions
What does excavation cost in San Antonio?
By HomeGuide's national 2026 figures, excavation costs $2.50 to $15.00 per cubic yard, and $1,100 to $5,600 for a typical project. Treat them as a national guide, not our price. Rock and caliche on the north side and wet clay on the south side move San Antonio prices most, so we quote after seeing the site.
Do I need to call 811 before digging?
Yes. Give Texas811 two working days or more, but not over 14 days, before the dig starts. We request the locate before every dig.
Do I need a tree permit to clear my lot?
On a lot with a finished single-family home in San Antonio, tree removal needs no city tree permit, but land being developed needs a tree permit or affidavit. Hired tree contractors need a city Tree Maintenance License.
Can you dig in rock?
Yes. North side limestone and caliche are common, and we use breakers and rock saws when the bucket will not cut it. Rock is priced in writing before we start.
Why does my yard hold water after storms?
On the clay south and east sides, water soaks in very slowly. On rocky lots, runoff from uphill collects at the house. Grading, swales and drains fix most yards.
Does a demolition need historic review?
In San Antonio, the Office of Historic Preservation reviews demolition requests across the city, so plan for that step before the permit.
How much does excavation cost in San Antonio?
It depends on the size of the dig, soil and rock conditions, access for equipment and how much material has to be hauled away. We visit the site and give you a written quote.
Do you locate utilities before digging?
Yes. We have underground utilities marked before any excavation starts.
Do I need a permit for excavation or grading in San Antonio?
Grading, trenching in the right-of-way and demolition often need permits. We check what applies to your site.
Do you haul away the dirt?

Do you work for homeowners or only builders?
Both. We do small residential jobs as well as site work for builders and businesses.
