Limestone, Caliche, Clay and Tight Access: Excavation Problems in San Antonio

What happens when a San Antonio dig hits limestone or caliche, wet clay, buried slabs or a narrow gate, plus soil tests and lawn repair. Call (210) 796-2675.

San Antonio ground is rock in the north and clay in the south and east, and both change how a dig goes. HomeGuide's national figures show rock pushing excavation from $2.50 to $15.00 per cubic yard to $50 to $200 or more.

All prices on this page are national ranges from HomeGuide, not quotes from us. In San Antonio, limestone, caliche, black clay, access and haul distance decide where a job really lands. Figures checked in October 2026.

What happens to the price if you hit rock?

If the excavator hits rock, the price rises because the work slows and a breaker or rock saw is needed. HomeGuide lists jackhammered rock at $50 to $200 or more per cubic yard, and notes that hitting rock on a foundation, basement or pool can add $15,000 to $20,000 or more. A written rock rate set before digging prevents arguments.

How far down is bedrock in San Antonio?

Depth to bedrock depends on the side of town. North of Loop 1604 and in Helotes, Boerne and Alamo Heights, limestone or hard caliche is often within a foot or two. On the south and east sides, clay and marl can run many feet before rock. The machine can reach deep; the rock decides how fast.

What if the clay soil is too wet to dig?

Wet clay soil sticks to the bucket, ruts under the tracks and will not compact, so grading and backfill wait for it to dry. Digging can sometimes continue on mats. Frozen ground is rare in San Antonio and almost never stops work.

Do I need a soil test before building?

For a new house or a large addition, yes: a geotechnical report tells the engineer how the clay will move or how deep the rock is. HomeGuide lists a geotechnical report at $1,000 to $5,000 and a basic soil test at $10 to $100 or more. On expansive clay, the slab design depends on it.

How do you get equipment through a narrow gate?

Through a narrow gate, we use a mini excavator or a compact loader, and sometimes take down a fence panel and put it back afterward. The smallest minis can pass through a gate roughly three feet wide. With no side access at all, hand digging or lifting a machine over are the options, and both cost more.

Will the machines damage my lawn, and who repairs it?

Equipment leaves marks, mostly on the path in and out. We use ground mats on soft lawn and keep to one route. Who repairs the lawn belongs in the contract. HomeGuide lists topsoil at $10 to $50 per cubic yard and spreading at $200 to $400.

What if you find an old buried foundation or contaminated soil?

Old slabs, buried foundations, cisterns and trash pits turn up on older San Antonio lots and are broken out and hauled like other debris. Soil that smells of fuel or looks stained is different: work stops and it is tested first. HomeGuide lists contaminant soil tests at $25 to $200 per sample.
