Rock spoil from a north side dig can sometimes stay on the lot as fill or wall stone. What cannot stay, we haul, and we bring in the right fill for what is left.
Nearly every dig makes spoil, and on rocky lots much of it is broken limestone and caliche. We load and haul soil, rock, concrete and brush, and we bring in fill, select fill, base, sand and topsoil where the job needs it. The haul distance and the weight of the load both affect the cost, so we look at the site before we quote. Clean rock can be worth keeping.
Different jobs need different dirt. Black clay is a poor choice under slabs because it swells, so pads often call for select fill. Crushed limestone base works under driveways and pads. Screened topsoil goes on top for lawns and beds. Rock spoil from a north side dig can sometimes be reused as fill on the same lot, which keeps it out of a truck.
Fill goes in thin layers and each one is compacted. A low spot or an old pool filled with loose dirt will sink after the first wet season and leave a new hole. Where fill goes near a creek or in a mapped floodplain, we check the local rules first, because some places limit how much can be added. Topsoil tops it off.
Hauling & fill dirt in San Antonio: common questions
Can you haul away rock and concrete?
Yes. We load and haul rock, concrete, soil and brush, often in the same trip.
What fill goes under a new slab here?
Whatever the engineer specifies. On clay lots that usually means select fill rather than the native black clay.
Can you fill an old swimming pool?
Yes. The shell is broken and drained, the hole is filled in compacted layers and then graded. The city may require a permit.
